Quick Asthma FactsAsthma is a lung disease you can get at any age. It can be controlled, and will scar your airways if it is not controlled. An Asthma attack is when the muscles around your airways become “twitchy” (suddenly begin to move fast) in response to an irritant or trigger. The airways become red, swollen and filled with mucus, and the airflow to your lungs is blocked. Triggers are things that cause your airways to swell and the muscles around your airways to get tight, and make it difficult to breath. Triggers can be many things: something you are allergic to; smoke; strong odors like perfumes and/or air fresheners; infections; exercise or weather changes. Know your triggers!! Your Asthma is IN control if:
Make sure your Asthma doctor is aware of your pregnancy. Take the enclosed Asthma Action Plan with you to your next appointment and have your doctor fill it out with you, if you don’t already have one. Make sure your OB doctor is aware of your Asthma and make sure he is aware of any medications you are taking for your Asthma. Ask your doctor to give you a prescription for a peak flow meter. It measures your breathing. Use it with your action plan daily, to help you know when to call your doctor or go to the Emergency Room. Your Asthma is NOT in control if:
If you are not in control, see your doctor as soon as possible. If your Asthma worsens, or you have to go to the ER, or have any problems with your pregnancy, please call the Mommy & Me nurse at 1-866-205-9945 – option 3. |
